The Lovat has long held a position in the catalogues of classic British pipes. Essentially a billiard, with an elongated shank its lines are conservative at its core yet eye catching in its presentation. The proportional boundaries of shank length to bowl height that are so strictly held to with a billiard are not merely ignored. There must be some thought to the dimensions so it does not appear too long, or too tall, too short or too portly. All these facets come together making the piece look sleek yet sturdy, delicate but not fragile. A Canadian shape achieves this as well but we are after a round shank and of course some sort of intermediary length. Its one of those “you’ll know it when you see it” moments. The production of Lovats is not rare but certainly secondary to more common, shorter shapes. It requires the pipe maker to find ebauchons long enough to not only allow them to cut a long shank but also clamp the piece securely in the tooling.
I spent time browsing old shape catalogues to come up with a pipe that is JUST under 6″ OAL. It is light in spite of its solid nickel fitment, flush mounted to somewhat modestly modernize its classic style. It weighs on average ~40g, just light enough to lend itself into any activity.
Chamber 3/4″ wide x 1 1/2″ deep
OAL 5 7/8″
~40g
Vulcanite
